Bulgarian delegation at the Palace of the Commonwealth
On Friday, 6 March 2026, Tomasz Makowski, Director of the National Library of Poland, met with a Bulgarian delegation at the Palace of the Commonwealth. The delegation included Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency, accompanied by his wife, and Dr Petar Lyanguzov, Director of the Bulgarian Cultural Institute.
The meeting focused on the current situation of libraries in Poland and Bulgaria, as well as opportunities for further developing cultural and institutional cooperation between the two countries.
Following the official talks, the delegation toured the exhibition of treasures from the National Library at the Palace of the Commonwealth. The guests were guided by Dr Maciej Szablewski, the Director’s Plenipotentiary for International Affairs and Head of the Department of Access to Collections.
One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to see the Supraśl Codex (Codex Suprasliensis) — an invaluable 10th-century monument of written heritage inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.
The meeting was another element of the growing cultural cooperation with Bulgarian partners. In 2025, in recognition of the National Library’s key role in preserving and promoting the Supraśl Codex, and on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of its discovery, the President of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, presented the institution with a commemorative medal of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The distinction underscores the importance of cultural cooperation between Poland and Bulgaria and highlights the role of the National Library in safeguarding Europe’s shared heritage.
Exhibitions at the Palace of the Commonwealth are open to the public free of charge every day except Tuesdays, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to explore palacrzeczypospolitej.pl, where detailed information about visiting the Palace can be found.
